The first few weeks with a newborn are a blurry blur of cuddles and sleeplessness. Usually, cleaning the baseboards is the last thing on your mind. However, when it comes time for your lifestyle newborn session, you might feel that ‘house shame’ creep in..
Here’s what I’m telling you: Stop scrubbing. You don’t need a model home to have a stunning gallery. Therefore, here is how to keep your sanity during a “Non-Studio” session.

Specifically, before I arrive, notice which room gets the best light. Because I’m looking for windows rather than organized bookshelves, that well-lit corner is where we will likely spend our time.
When I walk into a lifestyle newborn session, I am looking for how the light falls across a bed or a rug, not how high you’ve dusted the shelves.

Specifically, choose one corner near a window. Additionally, if the space within six feet is clear, the rest of the house can be a disaster zone. In other words, I promise the camera won’t see the laundry pile just outside the frame.

The only surface that truly matters is your nightstand. It’s the closest thing to your baby’s face in those intimate bed shots. Instead of cleaning the whole room, simply clear the nightstands. Ultimately, a clean surface near the bed keeps the focus entirely on you.
A busy floral duvet competes with your baby’s tiny features. Use a neutral, textured throw or a simple white quilt to create a clean, studio-like backdrop right on your own mattress.

I am an expert at “framing out” a stray diaper bag or a stack of mail. If there’s a pile of laundry just two feet away from the bed, I promise it won’t be in your photos. My goal is to capture the feeling of your new life, not the chores that come with it.
Your home is the sanctuary where your baby’s story begins. It should feel like a soft place to land, not a project to be managed. Let’s focus on the way you hold them, not the way you fold the laundry.
💡Pro Tip: Look for the Anchors Stop worrying about the messy bookshelf in the background. Instead, focus on the “anchors”—those small, grounded details like the way your baby’s hand rests on your shoulder or the quiet way the light hits the bed. When you look back at your photos, these are the moments that will help you remember exactly how this season felt, long after the laundry is folded. |
